The weather has officially changed here in YYC. There’s a distinct Christmas feel chill in the air, snow is covering the ground, and winter parkas are officially in rotation. Even though I accept that this is what’s happening, I’m taking is as a personal challenge to see just how long I can make it without having to parka-up. The key to keeping warm in a city where the weather changes on the daily is layers upon layers. As a gal that grew up in the city, I’ve had a bit of practice in this area, although I’m giving myself to the weekend to throw in the towel.

There is a distinct ’90s vibe in the air this fashion season, from grunge to prep and everything in between. I can’t say my heart lies with the grunge trend, but the preppy ‘Clueless’ situation is something that resonates wholeheartedly with me. A little plaid jumper, tights and high-heeled loafers and it’s like I’m back in 1995, but this time, on the right side of the fashion trend.

Some days for call for comfort, but while I want the unbinding comfort that my skinny jeans can’t offer, I don’t want to be rolling around town in sweat pants. Fret not my friends, there is a solution for this, and it’s in the form of something much more reliable than your actual boyfriend, it’s a pair of worked-in boyfriend jeans. Pair them with a slouchy sweater, silk blouse or tailored blazer, they’ll have you covered no matter what you’re planning this weekend.

The weather here in Calgary has been unseasonably warm as of late, and I’m fully taking full advantage. It’s such a treat to be able to wander the city sans coat this time of year, and I was downright spoiled the other day when I was able to throw on a pair of shorts, with bare legs no less. It’s days like this where I fall a little bit more in love with my city. So Vancouver friends, can we say ‘Calgary Plan’?
When fall starts showing signs of winter and Thanksgiving turns into Halloween, I start craving rich, complex flavors. Cinnamon, gingerbread and nutmeg are all high on my list of what baked goods are required to have. So when I came across this recipe for Gingerbread Cupcakes with Candied Ginger, and saw the extensive grocery list of ingredients, I was intrigued enough to try it out. Don’t let the long list deter you away, it was well worth the effort in tracking down everything involved. Delicious, rich, complex and oh-so-fall, I will definitely be making these little cakes again.
