There is a distinct ’90s vibe in the air this fashion season, from grunge to prep and everything in between. I can’t say my heart lies with the grunge trend, but the preppy ‘Clueless’ situation is something that resonates wholeheartedly with me. A little plaid jumper, tights and high-heeled loafers and it’s like I’m back in 1995, but this time, on the right side of the fashion trend.

Some days for call for comfort, but while I want the unbinding comfort that my skinny jeans can’t offer, I don’t want to be rolling around town in sweat pants. The weather here in Calgary has been unseasonably warm as of late, and I’m fully taking full advantage. It’s such a treat to be able to wander the city sans coat this time of year, and I was downright spoiled the other day when I was able to throw on a pair of shorts, with bare legs no less. It’s days like this where I fall a little bit more in love with my city. So Vancouver friends, can we say ‘Calgary Plan’?
When fall starts showing signs of winter and Thanksgiving turns into Halloween, I start craving rich, complex flavors. Cinnamon, gingerbread and nutmeg are all high on my list of what baked goods are required to have. So when I came across this recipe for Gingerbread Cupcakes with Candied Ginger, and saw the extensive grocery list of ingredients, I was intrigued enough to try it out. Don’t let the long list deter you away, it was well worth the effort in tracking down everything involved. Delicious, rich, complex and oh-so-fall, I will definitely be making these little cakes again.

For me there are weeks of sheer bliss and relief in making it through the week to the coveted day of Friday. Halloween is quickly approaching, and with it a massive To-Do list that includes everything from costume making to party prep to menu planning. I’m a procrastinator by nature, and I enjoy telling myself that it’s because I get my best work done just under the wire. Truth or not, I’m hoping this weekend will allow me to get ahead and cross off tasks on my list, all while in the comfort of my weekend uniform.
