The past couple of days have felt more spring-like than mid winter here in YYC.  When the temperature starts rising, it’s an automatic signal for all of the pretty pastels to wake from hibernation and slowly edge their way to the front of my closet.  Yet despite that above-average reading of the thermometer, January seems a touch too early to be donning bare legs.  Thankfully black truly does goes with everything, even with the very palest of pinks.  You can expect me to pair my black tights with all of my short hems until spring, unless I take a jaunt to somewhere more tropical, than it’s bare legs all the way.

Sometimes an all black ensemble makes the most sense.  This seems to happen more often than not during the long winter months, when my fine city is not quite at its finest.  The sidewalks are filled with slush and muck, and getting in and out of my car is like an elaborate game of Twister, contorting to ensure no body limb is attacked with dirt.  All in all, black threads help hide the various mud violations, but a pop of colour helps remind me that it won’t be long before spring is back in town.  The pretty pop of a petal pink bag makes all the black seem a little less bleak.  Now, hurry up spring.

This past weekend was spent down in Seattle cheering on my NFL team, the Seattle Seahawks in their playoff battle.  To say the weather cooperated while we were there would be a complete fabrication, and the constant rain reminded me of living in Vancouver.  While the actual temperature may look downright balmy compared to what we experience in Calgary, I still say, I take snow day over rain day, any day of the week.

If I haven’t made it completely clear at this point, based alone on the number of cookie recipes I have posted in the past, I’d like to state my thoughts on homemade cookies.  I beyond adore this sweet treat, crispy on the outside, chewy deliciousness on the inside.  In an effort to try as many different flavours as humanly possible, I came across this recipe from the Epicurious cookbook and gave it a go.  Let’s just say that this one is going to be heavy in the regular cookie rotation.

When the weather falls between winter parka and fall coat, the best way to combat the cold is to layer up.  This is especially necessary in a city that can start out sub-Arctic, gather the strength to warm up, toss in a mid-afternoon blizzard and turn balmy by dinnertime.  It’s truly an art that we locals have mastered.  There’s nothing worse than starting your day in a thick wool sweater and spending half of it feeling as though you made a wrong turn at the water cooler and ended up in the sauna.  So if you’re wavering in the morning, sometimes the right decision is the one with many layers.
