DIY – Oversized Scarf
To say that I love scarves would be a complete understatement. This season I’ve especially taken a liking to the oversized variety. You know, the kind of scarf that has enough fabric to be considered a small blanket, perfect for travel, and impossibly chic. I’ve discovered, however, that getting my paws on such a scarf has been easier said than done, so in order to make my dreams a reality, I decided to make my own.
When looking for fabric that would be conducive to using as a scarf, take into account its drapability and hand. This fabric is going to be directly on your skin next to your face, make sure it’s soft enough to snuggle up with. Also, be sure to check with the fabric store employee on whether the fabric you have chosen is machine washable, and before you start the project, feel free to throw it in the laundry.
- Often times when purchasing fabric from a fabric store the cute ends will be uneven. Using a measuring tape, measure out the length and width you’d like your scarf to be and square off to cut in straight lines.
- If your fabric frays easily (as mine did) at the cut edges it’s a good idea to sew a straight line approximately 0.5cm from the edge. This will help prevent future fraying of the fabric.
- Pull any loose threads off of the cut edge to clean it up.
- Feel free to give it a quick press if need be. All fabrics have what is called a selvage edge. It may or may not work with the look of your scarf (mine did, so I left it alone). If it does not look aesthetically right with your scarf, follow the above directions to cut it off and finish the edge.

After spending the previous two weekends dashing off to Seattle, this weekend’s slower pace was much appreciated. I had the chance to catch up on items around the house that had been neglected, spent time enjoying the gorgeous weather outdoors and supported a good cause with my family. Taking a weekend to recharge my batteries is so refreshing, and it often leaves me wondering why I don’t do it more often. Here’s to a fabulous week ahead my friends.
Intense Chocolate Brownies
Have you ever noticed that when the time comes to be in charge of dessert, you tend to search for something that will blow the crowd away, and forget about the classics? I find myself doing this more often than not these days. I seem to take it upon myself to personally prove to my guests that Martha (as in Stewart) has nothing on me. I choose a complicated dessert that looks like a gold medal winner, but ends up tasting more tenth runner up. The other day I remembered my old friend, the brownie, as I came across this recipe from The Flour Bakery. Half cake deliciousness and half fudgey goodness, it may not be a triple layer frothy confection, but it’s guaranteed to leave my guests wanting more.

It’s around this time of year that my thoughts drift to somewhere warmer. When I would give anything for a little tanned skin (the natural kind), to put my toes in the sand or to be able to go for dinner in nothing but a silk dress (without being cold). Getting a reprieve from the cold weather isn’t scheduled to happen any time soon, but a girl can dream, right?
Pastel Pretty
We’ve had some serious spring-like weather the past few days, and the warmer temps paired with all of the pretty pastels finding their way into stores makes it seem more April showers than mid-January winter lull. This spring is seeing pastels being done in everything from cashmere sweaters to fabulous leather jackets to structured handbags. I may find myself knee deep in snow in the next couple of weeks, but my closet surely won’t be able to tell the difference.
