Hand Me Down
Vintage Fur Coat, J Crew Sweater, AG Jeans, Burberry Boots (similar here and here), Chanel Handbag, Hermes Watch, David Yurman Bracelet
I always admired my Mom’s style growing up. I can still vividly remember the vibrant ’80s dresses, with their giant shoulder pads, brilliant colours and long hems as she headed off to work. I only wished I could be as chic as her one day. So you can imagine my excitement when this past fall I headed with her to meet a fur designer and offer her fur coats a little revamping. While there she gifted me one of her coats that felt a touch more Cruella Deville than it should have. We took up the hem, shortened the sleeves, and gave it an entirely new life. The icing on the cake.. my name (the one my family calls me) stitched in pink above my mom’s initials that were stitched in the coat nearly twenty years earlier.
Tones of Tan and Taupe
Vince Sweater (similar here), Rag & Bone Leather Pants, Yves Salomon Vest (similar here), Burberry Boots, Celine Handbag, Gucci Watch, Chan Luu Bracelet, Pyrrha Necklace
When dressing in the morning seems more like preparing for Olympic trials, I find the easiest way to get from bed to the front door is by keeping my ensemble monochromatic. Usually I don myself in all black when I’m performing this little trick, but the other day I was inspired to try tans and taupes, just to mix it up. I can’t tell you how much easier it is to get ready in the morning when there’s a game plan, and the monochromatic one works every time.
Super Bowl 2014
When the Seattle Seahawks won the NFC title, and the reality that they were headed to the Super Bowl sunk in, the next obvious discussion was who was going to host the Super Bowl party back in Calgary. Alongside my brother and sister-in-law, we decided to take on the responsibility. It’s no secret that Seattle is my team, and in a completely biased act, the party was decidedly a Seahawks one. Food was of utmost importance, and we took a cue from our beloved Seahawks, creating custom hot dogs named after our favourite players. I made football shaped cake pops and mini ‘Hawks jerseys, and we washed it all down with the signature ‘Kick Off’ beverage. It was a huge success, both the game and the party, and I’m sharing some pics of the prep today.
Beauty Routine
Mornings are a tough sell for me. I wish I was the type of person who was able to bounce out of bed, wide-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to tackle the day. Instead it’s more reminiscent of a scene from The Shining. So, in order to streamline my mornings, and in an effort to get to that coveted cup of coffee in the most efficient way, I have my beauty routine down to a science. These are the items in my personal makeup kit that never fail me. All in all I’m able to get my ‘morning game face’ on in under 15 minutes. If you ask me, that’s not so bad considering some mornings I move around with the grace of an elephant in a China shop.

DIY – Oversized Scarf
To say that I love scarves would be a complete understatement. This season I’ve especially taken a liking to the oversized variety. You know, the kind of scarf that has enough fabric to be considered a small blanket, perfect for travel, and impossibly chic. I’ve discovered, however, that getting my paws on such a scarf has been easier said than done, so in order to make my dreams a reality, I decided to make my own.
When looking for fabric that would be conducive to using as a scarf, take into account its drapability and hand. This fabric is going to be directly on your skin next to your face, make sure it’s soft enough to snuggle up with. Also, be sure to check with the fabric store employee on whether the fabric you have chosen is machine washable, and before you start the project, feel free to throw it in the laundry.
- Often times when purchasing fabric from a fabric store the cute ends will be uneven. Using a measuring tape, measure out the length and width you’d like your scarf to be and square off to cut in straight lines.
- If your fabric frays easily (as mine did) at the cut edges it’s a good idea to sew a straight line approximately 0.5cm from the edge. This will help prevent future fraying of the fabric.
- Pull any loose threads off of the cut edge to clean it up.
- Feel free to give it a quick press if need be. All fabrics have what is called a selvage edge. It may or may not work with the look of your scarf (mine did, so I left it alone). If it does not look aesthetically right with your scarf, follow the above directions to cut it off and finish the edge.
