I feel as though I’ve been looking at this whole Polar Vortex situation in the wrong way. Sure, instead of celebrating the oncoming of spring we’re still deep in the midst of winter. Instead of slowly transitioning my winter wardrobe to the back of the closet, I fear I may never have to pull my shorts and sandals to the front. There are, however, benefits to this frosty situation. Such as an extended season of wearing the warmest and chicest of my winter clothing. Shearling coats in March, it’s not unheard of people. By August I’m usually pining for my fall wardrobe, so perhaps this year, I won’t miss it at all.

It’s about this time of year that I miss the West Coast the most. Even though it’s been over three years since I ventured to Calgary, I miss that the cherry blossoms in front of our old house are starting to bloom now. The grass is a vibrant green at the park that was down the street from us, and the rain was starting to let up. Here in Calgary we’re still in the midst of winter, and the thought of blooming flowers and green grass is months away. Thank goodness I have a rendezvous to California planned, or I’d have to seriously start considering a relocation back to Vancouver.
Oscar Party Recap
The ballots were cast, the winners announced, and celebrations were had by all. My annual Oscar viewing party brought out a fabulous collection of ladies, as well as a couple of handsome men that were on hand to help out. There were glittered up champagne take homes, prizes for best dressed, speeches to rival Cate and Matthew, and an abundance of delicious eats (unlike the stars we like to indulge, heavily, in both beverages and snacks). I set up a martini bar that featured various versions of the Cosmopolitan, and we followed along throughout the evening with our trusty nomination forms. I ditched the party dress in favour of a blue suit and bow tie, I figured if Ellen could do it, so could I. I’m already anticipating next year’s big bash.

When the weather is deceivingly cold, the sky is a vast open mass of blue, and the sun is shining brightly, I often forget to check the temperature before heading out. Such has been the case the past few days, when the longing for spring and the glare of the sunshine pulls me away from the dark shades and textures in my closet for items that are light and fresh. I don’t know why, but this winter seems especially harsh and lengthy, and I’m reaching deep for ways to deal. First up on the list, dreaming of a warm vacation somewhere far away.

Winter is dragging on here in the city of Calgary, and I mean dragging it’s heels, finding every excuse possible to stick around. All of the pretty pastels are hitting stores and we’re still dealing with temperatures of -20 degrees Celsius. Instead of throwing in the towel and giving up, I’m not going to let it stop me from donning skirts and pretending spring is right around the corner.
