Boho Chic
Wilfred by Aritzia Dress, Valentino Gladiator Sandals, Saint Laurent Handbag, Chanel Watch, Charriol Bracelet, Links of London Bracelet
I can’t believe it’s already June and almost halfway through this year. Last summer was such a blur of personal wreckage, so I’m especially excited to truly enjoy this summer. Calgary has been such a beauty, with the weather acting more mid July than end of May, and I’ve been taking advantage as much as possible. Last year this boho chic dress was my go-to in black, and this year I’ve added it in white to give the darker version a little reprieve from the constant wear. It’s such an easy look to throw together to meet up for drinks on the patio, indulge in a little brunch or hit up all of those baby and bridal showers on the books. Win-win for everyone.

There’s a trend happening for shirt hemlines that have them rising further and further towards the sky. This trend is something I may have unabashedly gotten behind back in my teens and early 20s, but these days the idea of baring my belly in public is less than appealing. Until I realized that it’s all about moderation. Donning a high waisted skirt, where you’re able to tuck everything in, and pairing it with a crop top feels less risqué than being belly out, Britney Spears style. Mental note though, next time be sure to tan that tummy before letting it out to play.
Canadiana
Tanya Taylor Dress (similar here), Anneke Forbes Leather Jacket, Stuart Weitzman Sandals, Chanel Handbag, Shinola Watch, Tiffany Bracelet, David Yurman Bracelet
My years in fashion design school were a constant mix between being inspired to pursue a career as a fashion designer and feeling detoured by the immense obstacles that a fashion designer faces, especially one in Canada. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to explain and champion why an independent designer cannot produce t-shirts for under $20, why someone would purchase a dress for the price it cost you to make it when they could get something for a 1/10th of the price at TOPSHOP, and why it is so hard to make a living doing something ‘so glamorous’.
So when I see someone living out their own dream, taking the plunge and triumphantly producing inspiring, quality designs, my first instinct is to support. Such is the case with my entire ensemble in today’s post. The dress I’m donning is Tanya Taylor, an Ontario native that is absolutely killing it down in New York. Her garments have been seen on everyone from Reese Witherspoon to Beyonce to Michelle Obama. I love how fresh and feminine her designs are without being fussy, and the custom print she created for her pieces this season is inspiring. I should also mention that her entire collection is designed and produced in New York, that’s bonus points for supporting the North American work force.
Now, this fabulous leather jacket, this buttery soft, powder blue dream was designed and produced entirely by the exquisitely talented Anneke Forbes, our very own local fashion designer. I initially met Anneke through the world of blogging, and like most of us aspiring fashion designers, she wore many hats. Recently she’s re-launched her site, Anneke Forbes, to reflect her dedication to her designs, a place where you can shop her creations online. This leather jacket is tailored-made to order, and the fit and attention to detail is comparable to all of the high-end designs that reside in my closet. I can’t wait to see what Anneke comes out with next, and I promise to share it with all of you.
I just want to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported me and my designs throughout my journey. You have no idea how much it means and what a tremendous impact it has. Thank you for allowing me to design, sew and create garments with these little hands of mine. It truly is what feeds my soul.
Sequin Bomber
Alice + Olivia Bomber Jacket (similar here and here), 7 for All Mankind Denim, J. Crew Tank, Manolo Blahnik Pumps, Chanel Handbag, Tom Ford Sunglasses, Hermes Watch, Tiffany Bracelet, David Yurman Bracelet
There are certain pieces in my closet that have the power to transform a ‘blah’ ensemble into something pretty special. My sequin bomber is just that, and no matter how questionable my outfit choice may be pre-jacket, once that little bit of sequin perfection is placed on top, it’s instantly elevated. The casual bomber style helps keep it from being too glam, so I don’t feel black tie when I’m dashing into the grocery store. Bottom line, never knock sequins without giving them an old college try first.
Gladiators
One of the top footwear trends this season is the gladiator sandal, and it’s being offered in every shape and design imaginable. I’ve rounded up a small sampling of my favourites, from high heeled beauties to practical flats, to show-stopping knee highs that would make Russell Crowe take notice. The fabulous thing about the gladiator style is that it goes with everything, from feminine dresses all the way to ripped jean shorts and torn tees. My own gladiators were a wardrobe staple last summer, and I’m so thrilled that they’re back again. Round two, take one.
