I can remember being in elementary school and thinking that navy blue was an absolute old lady color.  I’m here to say that I officially take it all back.  Navy has become, hands down, one of my favorite colors.  And 21 29 is not old.  Navy is a fabulous neutral alternative to black and brown. I find that it looks gorgeous against the skin and is stunning when paired with a pop of fuchsia, teal and tangerine.  When it’s been a long winter filled with black coats, gloves and hats, a navy parka is so refreshing.

The idea of having a pantry was not only a luxury, but also a strong selling point when I moved from Vancouver to Calgary.  Going from one shelf in the kitchen to an entire closet seemed almost too good to be true.  Being able to go the grocery store and purchase multiple items to ‘store’ in your pantry?  All of this sounded fantastic, until my pantry started resembling the above photo.  I decided that in the spirit of starting fresh in 2013, I would come up with a system to help keep this pantry as pretty as possible.  Using a combination of clear plastic containers and clean, streamlined baskets with handmade labels did the trick.  It’s so pretty inside I may start giving tours to my guests.

It’s hard to believe that in the span of 24 hours this lovely city of mine has gone from spring-like conditions to full out winter.  It’s tricky this city, and dressing for a day like this is always a challenge.  In order to make it through, I distracted myself with the prettiest of textures, lace, wool, leather and fur.  I also avoided looking at spring arrivals online, it’s just cruel.

On a typical day there seems to be at least half a dozen items I need to cross off my to-do list.  They range from large, multi-step projects to small, quick tasks.  There are items that have been on the list for minutes, and others that, quite literally, have been on there for years.  In order to maximize my time I often don my uniform of jeans, blazer, scarf and flats.  It’s quick to pull together, and just because I won’t be addressing a boardroom, doesn’t mean I need to be dressing like I was just broken up with either.  Unless it involves ice cream, then count me in.

There are so many special occasions in life that need to be honored with cake.  There’s even more moments in life that should be honored by cake but often are not.  Much like bringing home flowers unexpected, sometimes I like to whip up a a special little something for those smaller moments in life.  I found this recipe in the Miette cookbook, and the results were heavenly.  The denseness of the chocolate cake, the raspberry buttercream frosting… don’t even get me started.
